Grampian Information Member RGU ranked No.1 in UK for Librarianship & Information Management studies

Robert Gordon University (RGU), in Aberdeen, has been announced as top UK university for Librarianship and Information Management studies<http://www.rgu.ac.uk/infocommedia> after being ranked number one by the independent ‘Complete University Guide’ <http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/> Subject League Tables 2013 (<http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/>http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/).The Subject League Table results are deduced from four measures: Student Satisfaction (Ofsted assessments in the case of the Education table), Research Assessment, Entry Standards and Graduate Prospects.Data to determine the rankings is taken from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) - the official agency for the collection, analysis and dissemination of quantitative information about the universities. For the ‘Complete University Guide’ the agency provides data for entry standards, student-staff ratios, spending on academic services, facilities spending, good honours degrees, graduate prospects, completion and overseas student enrolments.RGU’s Information Management department’s excellent reputation has been built up over many years and it has regularly been ranked highly by surveys and guides. The Department’s research was ranked number one in Scotland and joint number two in the UK in the latest national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008.The department has an excellent record of academic success based on the fundamental belief that information and its effective management are central to the social, economic and cultural well-being of society.Professor Peter Reid, Head of Department of Information Management, RGU said; “Being ranked top university for Librarianship and Information Management studies is testament to RGU’s commitment to deliver the highest standard of quality and best practice in teaching and research. Grampian Information are happy to announce that we are now accepting nominations for the Grampian Information Awards. Two awards were introduced in 2007. The Grampian Information Group Individual Award which recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the information profession.
The Grampian Information Group Service Award recognizes an exceptional service.Examples of relevant activities might include:• activities which raise the profile of information professionals in the area
• innovative use of technology
• development of a new resource
• significant contribution to the Grampian library and information partnership

Westhill Library Community Visit

Grampian Information organised a visit to the new Westhill Community Library on 7th September. Community Librarian, Jacqueline Geekie spoke to attendees about the new library and how it had been well received by users since opening on 1st August. Jacqueline included information about the consultation with the local residents in planning the library and the Journey of a Book project where pupils at local primary schools chose books for the new library. She also spoke about the Westhill Library Art project where artists Gabrielle Reith and Philip Thomson worked with the local community to produce artwork for the new library. A tour of the library was given showing the new facilities. Thank you to Jacqueline and Westhill Library for hosting the event

Westhill Community Library Visit

The future of library services is a topic of discussion for all professionals, come and see the future of one library in Aberdeenshire. On 7 September 2011 at 5:30 at the Community Library at Westhill. The event will last 1 hour and refreshments will be provided. We will be touring the facility, hearing about its development, and plans for working with schools in the community. Coming To A Library Near You? The Digital Economy Act 2010 - The Implications for Libraries

Still not decided whether to attend the CILIPS Conference this year? The CILIPS North East Branch are very pleased to announce that our speaker at Branch & Group Day will be Laurence Bebbington, Deputy Librarian & Head of Library Services at the University of Aberdeen.

Following the failure in April of a challenge to the legitimacy of the Digital Economy Act 2010, this Act is now on course for full implementation in the UK. Although the full force of the Act is still some time away this new legislation on copyright protection on the internet will mean new obligations for museums, libraries and archives and may have implications for public internet access services. Failure to understand and comply with obligations under the Act has legal, reputational and financial risks. Laurence’s presentation will outline the current and future implications of the Act for libraries, museums and archives.

Laurence’s session on 8 June 2011 will be open to all and we’d be very pleased to see Grampian Information members there.

New Grampian Information Web Presence

Following feedback from many of our members and users, the Grampian Information Website will be undergoing an overhaul over the next few months. We are hoping to make it more user friendly and add a directory of expertise that will be help you identify local experts in different subjects for training needs and other enquiries.

The website will still be a point of reference for your enquiries about upcoming Grampian Information events. There is an exciting programme of events for April 2011-April 2012 which will be shortly coming to you! So please check back in the coming months to see our progress, and be patient with us through this development process.
