SLIC/CILIPS Event Updated

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Elaine Fulton has regretfully had to withdraw her attendance from the event being held on 30 June 2010 due to a back injury, but Marilyn Milligan, Chair of CILIPS and SLIC Board member and Cathy Kearney Assistant Director will be able to attend in her stead.  We have already have considerable interest in attending this event, and hope to gain more by this exciting news: at the event on 30 June we will be hosting raffle for two tickets for the Britain’s Got Talent Finalist Tour being held at the AECC on  Thursday 1 July 2010.  Our  annual conference will be held at the AECC on 4 November, and they have graciously offered two tickets for a Grampian Information member and guest!  You will need to come on the 30 June and enter and be available to attend the next night.   We look forward to seeing you at the event on the 30 June 2010.  Light refreshments will be served so please make sure to let me know if you will be attending!

Hollywood Librarian Screening

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Grampian Information presents….

The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians through Film

Thursday 9th April

6pm refreshments

Film starts 6.30pm

£5/£2.50 students

Room 226, Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University, Garthdee

The Hollywood Librarian is the first full-length documentary film to focus on the work and lives of librarians.  Using the entertaining and appealing context of American movies, the film holds surprises for people who may think they know what librarians do. American film contains hundreds of examples of librarians and libraries on screen — some positive, some negative, some laughable and some dead wrong. Films such as Sophie’s Choice, Philadelphia and It’s a Wonderful Life show librarians as negative stereotypes. The librarians in Lorenzo’s Oil, Desk Set and The Shawshank Redemption, on the other hand, are competent and professional. Dozens of interviews of real librarians are interwoven with movie clips of cinematic librarians and serve as transitions between the themes of censorship, intellectual freedom, children and librarians, pay equity and funding issues, and the value of reading.

All Welcome.
